Libya Visa Details

This is an email I received for getting a visa for Libya. This is the process you follow, although I am not sure if it’s still the same.

1. A tour company approachs the immigration authority for an invitation to be sent

2. An invitation is sent to the Libyan People’s Bureau in your country. For the US, this is in Ottawa, Canada.

3. When the confirmation ahs been sent, you take your passport, two photographs, and fill in an application form for the visa.

4. Before you hand in your passport, make sure it has your passport information translated into Arabic and printed on your passport by a sworn translator or official department. This, we hear, is no longer true.

5. The visa takes from a few days to two weeks to be issued.

6. People with an Israeli Visa stamp on their Passport will not be issued the Visa in compliance with Libyan embargo against Israel

7. American citizens are indeed allowed to enter Libya.

8. Your Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from date of applying for the visa.

9. Due to recently introduced regulations, you are no longer able to travel in Libya without booking some tour services through a company.

12 Day Libya Trip

Here is one of many different Libya itineraries.

Day 1:TRIPOLI
Arrive in Tripoli.

Day 2: TRIPOLI – GASR AL-HAJ – NALUT – GHADAMES
Early morning on a paved road, we head southwest for the oasis of Ghadames. On the way make stops at Ghasr Al-Haj and Nalut of the Western Mountain Region. Late afternoon we arrive to Ghadames for the night.

Day 3: GHADAMES – AL-HAMADAH AL-HAMRAH
In the morning, we visit the ancient oasis of Ghadames (UNESCO World heritage), then in 4WD vehicles, we drive southeast heading for AL-Hamadah AL-Hamrah (The Red Plateau) as we begin our Sahara desert adventure.

Day 4: AL-HAMADA AL-HAMRAH
Keep touring this Sahara deserts regions

Day 5: AL-HAMADAH – NEAR IDRI
We tour in AL-Hamada until we arrive near the oasis of Idri.

Day 6: NORTHERN IDHAN UBARI – WADI AL-HIAT
We turn southwest across the sand dunes of northern Ubari. Late afternoon arrive to the region of Wadi Al-Hiat (Valley of Life). We spend the night in a camp near Tkherkiba with a chance of shower and bed.

Day 7: WADI METKHANDUSH – IDHAN MURZUG
We head for the Valley of Metkhandush, famous for its prehistory rock carvings. Then we driveto the sand dunes of Idhan Murzug for the night.

Day 8: WAN CASA – AKAKUS MOUNTAINS
We head west for the famous region of Akakus, passing across Wan Casa dunes.

Day 9: AKAKUS
We keep touring this region – known for its striking nature and prehistory rock art. We camp near Adhad.

Day 10: AL-OWINAT – TKERKIBAH
Leave Akakus, we drive north, back to Wadi Al-Hiat, to spend the night in Tkherkiba camp near the entrance of Idhan Ubari.

Day 11: IDHAN UBARI – SABHA – TRIPOLI
We drive across, Idhan Ubari, famous for its giant sand dunes and sahara lakes. We will make a few stops at Mafo Lake, Gabr Own Lake & Mandara Lake before leaving for the city of Sabha to catch the evening flight to Tripoli.

Day 12: TRIPOLI
Take a full day break at the capital of the city with a chance to visit its national museum and Medina.

Exploring Libya

Here is an example of a 10 day itinerary in Libya

DAY 1: Arrival in Tripoli.

DAY 2: Flight to Sebha. It’s south of Libya, about 1.000 km. Afterwards, you drive to Serdalus (Alwynat). Then continue driving to Awais where the first of the pre-historical rock arts of 12,000 years ago started. There is dinner and camping.

DAY 3-4: After breakfast, we travel to Akakus-Tadrart, visiting the wadies which contain a lot of paintings and drawings, lunch, and continue tour to Emaning Well where to fresh up and/or get cool drink from the desert spring, camping at Wadi Tashwinat ( full of the engravings)

DAY 5:Departure to Mathkandaoush, visiting the rock paintings and graffiti and admiring the beautful panorama.

DAY 6:Drive to plateaus of Massak, a continuation of the sand dunes scattered with rock and stone, lunch,and continue tour, visiting the graffiti, camping.

DAY 7: An excursion to the great salty lakes surrounded by a huge of sand dunes, lunch at Germa( old city) and camping at the nearby Umm Alma Oasis.

DAY 8: Drive to Sebha airpot, flight to Tripoli.
DAY 9:
Visit the Museum of Tripoli, visit of the archeological sites of Sebrata, the city where you will discover ancient ruins of Romans and Greek ( having a lunch there and then back to Tripoli hotel.
