Blog carnival round-up

Some posts from Family Travel have been featured in different blog carnivals around the Web, and I found some gems for you:

**  At the Carnival of Family Life hosted by the Real Life blog, readers can find my post that asks, “Are there times when it’s not a good idea to take kids to certain dangerous events like the rodeo, or an air show?”  Let’s talk about when bad things happen to good travel

My post on nursing is best for the traveling baby was also on the Carnival of Family Life hosted the previous week by Mom on Wheels.

Other Family Life carnival posts I liked included one from a Melbourne Mom who went to Showtime, apparently the Aussie equivalent of our US state fair. They ate Pluto Pups, cream polly waffles and fairy floss.  What?!

Vicky has some great tips for traveling with kids in London

Ben Cotten says that men are like cats, especially when Mom leaves town and Dad has a corn dog supply.

**  I’m always glad when I can send in a post to the Rock and Roll carnival, since it’s an interesting mix of music-related writing.  This month they featured my D.A.R.E. to stay at these hotels post on drug-related family travel (yes, there is such a thing, I think I invented it.  Way too much coffee….)

Also check out popular music in India and new trends in Bollymusic.  Are you a musician?  Review the top 8 things that unsigned/independent artists do wrong

**  The Carnival of Cities featured my post from the Perceptive Travel blog about finding plastic food in Tokyo.

There were also some great travel-related posts about Epcot in Orlando’s Walt Disney World, a Myanmar/Burma update and the “Hairy Swede” talks about Stockholm, Sweden.

**  The Carnival of Wheels at GarageBlog included my interview with drag racing star Ashley Force on The Driving Woman. In a few weeks, look for a full Ashley Force profile on the Edmunds.com Web site section called Women and Family Car Guide

Carnival of Cities: The “See You in September” Edition

Globe and skyline (courtesy kudzuplanet at flickr's Creative Commons)

Welcome to this edition of the Carnival of Cities (and by the way, see this Home Turf Media Carnival page if you’re interested in hosting an upcoming edition. Spots are available.)

This is the first time that Family Travel has hosted a blog carnival; if you like the mix of posts from different bloggers, check out the Blog Carnival Web site for links to over 2000 carnivals on a variety of topics.

School may have started, but we’re still ready for some travel, so here we go….

**  Cities in the Americas  **

Anchorage, Alaska, USA   Marilyn Terrell and the folks at National Geographic Traveler magazine’s blog Intelligent Travel spent some time quizzing the Alaskan locals about fun winter ways to play, eat and sleep up north, in Anchorage Away!

New York, New York, USA   I love raw oysters, fried oysters, any old kinda oysters, so it was mouth-watering to read Rickey Henderson’s REVIEW: The Oyster Bar (inside the gorgeous Grand Central Station) posted at his blog Adam’s Rib.

Denver, Colorado, USA   How about some good beer to go with those oysters?  Kara Williams gives us the lowdown about Denver Microbreweries on her blog Colorado Review (and yes, microbreweries can be kid-friendly; we used to go to the Coddington Brewing Company in Middletown, RI all the time.)

Seattle, Washington, USA   Learn about the origins of “The Wave” and get a football sneak preview with Mary Jo Manzanares; she writes about The Seahawks’ Qwest for Success at her blog The Seattle Traveler.  As for me, I’ll just wait for March Madness.

(near) Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA   David B. Bohl is a lifestyle mentor and educator who loves where he lives, and wonders, Are Midwesterners Happier and Friendlier? at his blog Slow Down Fast Today!

Briny Breezes, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA   Way out in California, the Silicon Valley Blogger finds out about a Florida town that says, Nope, Not Selling Our House. Not Even For 1000% Rate Of Return In 2 Years!  He writes about it at The Digerati Life, saying, “What do Chongqing, China and Briny Breezes, Florida have in common? Find out in this post.”

Bronx, New York, USA   Attention, birders!  Mike Bergin says you can find the Cattle Egret in the Bronx at his blog 10,000 Birds, saying, “While NYC as a whole is a fantastic city for naturalists, the Hunts Point section of the Bronx is definitely not!”  Well, not usually….

**  Cities in Europe  **

London, United Kingdom   Over at the Perceptive Travel blog, writer Antonia Malchik is a real bookstore groupie, especially travel bookstores (and who wouldn’t be a groupie about those?!)  She finds bliss in London’s Stanfords, the “world’s best travel bookstore.”

Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy   Steve Madsen presents Songs of Praise in Vernazza posted at Exit Row Seat, saying, “A video presentation of our Vernazza photos backed by the local choir recorded at a concert in July.”

Paris, France   Darlene Berkel suggests that you find Culture and Romance With a Paris Tour, posted at her blog Everyone Loves To Travel, saying, “Paris is a place that has a lot to offer, and a tour will help you make the most of the time you are able to spend in the city.”

Preston, United Kingdom   Riversider has an update on the Riverworks Ribble barrage, as he writes that the Council Votes To Ignore Flood Risk to Preston Residents posted at Save The Ribble.

Zurich, Switzerland   We have one last tribute to summer, as Jul gets a waterfront view while Floating through the city posted at the expat blog This non-American Life.  They even got to keep the floaty things.

**  Cities in Asia  **

Mauritius, Indian Ocean   Local blogger Alfa King writes about a variety of Holy festivals on his island home, posted at Alfa King Memories.

Phuket, Thailand   Vanalli pays tribute to the sleepy, “morphine-like qualities” found in Phuket Town: Still as dreamy as ever posted at The Lost Boy

Angkor, Cambodia   Experience the wonders of an ancient civilizaiton as artThailand gives us a detailed tour of how to best enjoy Marvellous Angkor, posted at the artThailand site.

That concludes this edition, and thanks for visiting.

Family Travel hosts the Carnival of Cities

                                Carnival of Cities logo

Many of you know that I work with Home Turf Media on its Carnival of Cities, a blog carnival with posts that each feature some aspect of a specific city.

A blog carnival is just a roundup of different writer’s posts about a particular topic, hosted on one blog.

For the first time, the Family Travel blog is going to play host to the Carnival of Cities, and I’m really looking forward to serving up the urban literary tidbits (drinks and nachos will be right over, as Successful Blog’s Liz Strauss says in her Friday SOB Business Cafe.)

To participate, use the blog carnival submission form to submit ONE post that relates to a particular city. Any angle is fine as long as it is related to a specific city (or fair-sized town.) Comment on a local politician’s latest blunders, share a favorite restaurant review or present the city from a tourist’s point of view.

To see how it’s done, take a look at this week’s Carnival, the Hot August Night edition.

Normally this carnival posts on Mondays, but because Monday, September 3, 2007 is the US Labor Day holiday, we’ll post on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 instead.

Deadline to submit, however, is the usual:  2 pm Eastern on Sunday (Sept 2, 2007.)

Thanks also to another carnival this week:  Sandier Pastures (based in Dubai) featured my Perceptive Travel blog post, Traveling parent faces hotel reality check in the Carnival of Family Life.

South America and family info in latest blog carnival

Family Travel posts are featured in two blog carnivals this week.

The current Carnival of Cities has posts from Preston to Dubai and is hosted by the Buenos Aires Argentina Guide.

As usual there are plenty of interesting places to visit (including my post about Historic Jamestowne, Virginia) but I wanted to call special attention to a couple of South American blogs, since I’ve never made it to either city mentioned….

Says carnival host Alan Patrick,

** São Paulo, Brazil: Tony Galvez posts about the slightly unusual idea of a Japanese Festival in Brazil on his Brazil Travel Blog, with lots of photos from this colorful event.

** Buenos Aires, Argentina: My friend Dalila presents her 7 things to do on your visit to Palermo Viejo, the coolest area of Buenos Aires, in her blog Trendy Palermo Viejo. Some nice tips there, Dalila – I really should get hold of some of those free maps of Palermo for myself. :)

The Carnival of Family Life is hosted by the Be A Good Mom blog, and among the many offerings is this heartrending post by Penelope Trunk, who presents My first day of marriage counseling posted at Brazen Careerist.  I read Penelope regularly and sometimes find her searing honesty uncomfortable (as do many commenters on the post) but I’m so glad that there are journalists like her out there.

Finally, my Perceptive Travel blog post on the joys of Japanese vending machines was featured on the new Carnival of Travel Articles, hosted by Travel Minx.

Latest blog carnival action

Family Travel’s post on fall travel planning is featured in this week’s Carnival of Family Life. Other posts include a tribute to Dads, plus yummy blueberry pancake recipe, from a blog about the Fish Creek House in Whitehall, Montana and tips on flying with kids. Check it out.

My post over on the Perceptive Travel blog about the Austin City Limits Music Festival was featured in the latest Carnival of Cities, hosted across the Pacific (New Zealand) by fellow blogger Liz Lewis at her Christchurch Tour Guide blog on Home Turf Media.

Finally, not particularly family travel-related but still fun is my Fast Machines post about NASCAR’s roots in moonshine-running, which is featured in the current Carnival of Wheels (for car enthusiasts.)
