Roots of Rock: Sun Studio, Memphis

Sun Studio, Memphis, Tennessee (Scarborough photo)That’s all right, Mama!

‘Cause I walk the line….at the home of rockabilly and rock n’ roll, tiny Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee.

Kids who have only known music in digital formats downloaded from a computer are often intrigued by a visit here.

They’ll learn how producer and Sun Records owner Sam Phillips found amazing talent all over the South, then brought it to the microphone to record genre-busting music.

Even his use of drums in recordings was revolutionary for that time, because Deep South radio stations often would not play any songs that included drums because that made the music “too black.”

Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Howlin’ Wolf, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis all spent some of their early days recording at Sun.

Visitors can take a guided tour and learn all about it:

“Sun Studio is open seven days a week from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm daily. Tours are given at the bottom of every hour on the half hour starting at 10:30 and ending at 5:30. Sun Studio requires at least 1 to 1.5 hours. The tour ticket price is $9.50 per person, & children under 12 are free. We apologize, but due to the nature of our guided performance tour, children 3 & under are not allowed to take the tour. No reservations are necessary.”

Goodness gracious, great balls of fire.

Finding the Good Stuff: Music in Austin.

I didn’t manage to post this yesterday as promised, but I did find and unpack the cereal bowls, so there’s some progress on the move-into-the-house front. Here’s what I’ve discovered about the “Live Music Capital of the World;” the number of offerings is ridiculously large and (duh) many aren’t set up for children unless you think it’s a good idea to traipse into Antone’s with them at 10 o’clock at night.

Outdoor venues like the Backyard can work with older kids, but tickets can be pricey since they book national acts. I found another outdoor place that has terrific free local music from spring through summer, but since we just arrived in midsummer I never had a chance to take the kids to the Shady Grove Unplugged concert series sponsored by awesome local radio station KGSR. You can be sure with performers like Joe Ely, Ray Wylie Hubbard, the Mother Truckers and South Austin Jug Band, I’ll be all over this place as soon as I finish unpacking cereal bowls.

Most people know about the legendary music festivals in Austin: the Austin City Limits Music Festival this coming weekend and of course, South by Southwest (SXSW) in March. Many don’t know that SXSW is a music and film and interactive (Internet/blogger/digital world) event; there’s so much going on you could stay up for days, although that may not be terribly family-friendly.

I told my teenage daughter that I’d get her a wristband and take her to see some bizarro Norwegian band playing at 2 a.m., and she’s still trying to figure out if I’m kidding.

The festivals do make an effort to include children’s events, recognizing that just because we music lovers have had children does not mean that our concert-going days are over. ACL Festival offers the Austin Kiddie Limits performance area which this year includes one of my favorites, Joe McDermott.

If you happen to travel to the Austin area and just want to know what’s playing while you’re there, take a look at the Thursday XLent section of the local paper, the Austin American-Statesman. There are even more comprehensive listings in the free Austin Chronicle, which also comes out every Thursday and is distributed to hip restaurants and bookstores all over town….here it is online.

Read it carefully for appearances at the UT Student Union folkie haven Cactus Cafe, Stubb’s BBQ, Threadgill’s, Gruene Hall, The Broken Spoke honky-tonk dance hall, Ruta Maya coffeehouse, One World Theater or the downtown Paramount Theater.

When looking for recordings of local tunes, look no further than Waterloo Records at 6th and Lamar. The only problem is that everything is filed alphabetically rather than by genre, so you’d better have at least some idea of what you’re looking for or your brain will explode by the time you plow through “G.”

Oh, well, you can always just run next door to funky Amy’s Ice Cream or across the street to the Whole Foods flagship store to fortify yourself.

Have a good time in the Cosmic Cowboy town.

Note: This is a 22 September 2006 re-post of a 15 September 2006 previously published item, from a Google cache. I am re-creating some recent posts that disappeared in a BootsnAll server crash. The original comments were unfortunately lost.

Take the Kids to the Newport RI Folk Festival.

I’d love to have something more original to post, but I’m in the middle of a move, so let me instead highlight this article on Out With The Kids; it has all sorts of ideas and suggestions for taking the family to the Newport RI Folk Festival held at scenic Fort Adams on the bay.

(My parents saw Peter, Paul & Mary live there in the 60’s; the event’s been around for awhile!)

The 2006 lineup (August 5-6) includes David Gray, Rosanne Cash, the Meters (awesome funky New Orleans group,) Odetta and the Indigo Girls, to list just a few.

More Road Trippin’ Ideas, Plus USA Travel Music.

Now, I know I’ve already had a recent post on road trip planning, but you know you can never have enough.

There are tips aplenty at Travel With Kids, and if you travel on some of the main US Interstate highways you can check out the sightseeing options here. I found this great site called TurnHere.com, with quirky video guides to many cities (great visuals for your kids.)

You know I think good eats are key….here are 10 highway exits with yummy food at the offramp. The International Herald Tribune takes the tough job of travel across the country eating only fast food (and somehow the author does not die in the attempt.)

But here’s the important stuff — music for the road. Some great options are listed here and here, and there’s always my current favorite Sirius satellite radio (Blues Channel 74, please) but let’s go further….

When I lived overseas, my daughter attended an International School. For a festival booth at her school, I made up 7 CDs of background music that I thought was evocative of everything about the U.S.; all of the different cultures and major immigrant groups and the open road. The set rapidly became my kid’s favorite for road trips, so I’d like to share it with you.

Here are the first 3 playlists; I’ll post the rest later this weekend once I finish ranting about Richard Petty and writing up NHRA drag racing articles.

Travel to a Summer Music Festival.

Canada’s Globe & Mail travel section has an article highlighting some 2006 summer music festivals around the globe.  This might be fun if you travel with teenagers and both of you like music.

My daughter, one of her friends and I just attended a Switchfoot concert and had a great time (even standing in line afterwards for autographs.) Obviously a big, sweaty, mosh-pitted outdoor festival is on a different scale, but if you and your kid are up to it, why not?

If rock’s not your thing, there are so many other options: in Newport, Rhode Island alone is the world-class Folk Festival (sponsored by Dunkin’ Donuts….what? I’m missing the folkie-donut connection) and Jazz Festival.  Lots of other cool music at Festival Productions.

For an interesting twist on this topic, here’s one blogger’s rundown on Chinese rock bands trying to play in certain places outside of China.  I found the link in the Global Voices Travel section, a jam-packed commentary compilation featuring non-US bloggers.

Well, duh!

Get some (tickets) and take the (older) kids to hear wonderful music in the Live Music Capital.
