Where to Stay in Porto: The Yeatman Hotel

Set on a hill overlooking Porto on the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the Duoro River, the Yeatman Hotel is possibly one of the city’s most luxurious hotels. Perfect for honeymooners or those looking to make their stay in Porto extra special, this wine-themed hotel is among the best accommodation options in the city. One can throw a lot of superlatives around when describing it; it’s classy, posh, grandiose, opulent. Like a black patent Louboutin stiletto with a bright red sole, it’s at once classic and modern, elegant and sexy.

The rooms

The 82 rooms at the Yeatman are spacious with sliding glass doors that open onto private patios and offer floor-to-ceiling views of Porto just across the river.

The rooms are named after Portuguese wine producers, and each is decorated with soft hues of teal, lime and bright yellow, with leather ottomans, plus easy chairs, and ornate headboards, along with distinctive touches like wine bottles, original artwork, and Portuguese ceramic tiles. Each has a soft bed, work desk,  laptop safe, ample closet space, and flat screen tv.

The bathrooms have heated tile floors and deep soaking tubs, from which (if you open the louvered shutters that separate the bathroom from the bedroom) you enjoy the same beautiful views of the city. Caudalie Vinotherapie products are provided, as well as soft, fluffy robes.

The food and wine

As you might expect from a luxury wine-themed hotel, there are several spots for relaxing with a snack and a glass of port or wine. In addition to the pool area lounge and the top floor terrace, there’s Dick’s Bar, which serves cocktails and wines, or the Library Bar, where guests can also enjoy a cigar from the hotel’s humidor. But the main culinary attraction is the hotel’s restaurant, which serves modern versions of traditional Portuguese food in set tasting menus matched with wine. Guests can also opt to have a private dinner served on their room’s terrace.

The spa

Even if you don’t stay at the Yeatman, don’t miss indulging in a spa treatment. Prices start at 65-105 euros for wraps, scrubs and massages using Caudalie Vinotherapie products. You can also book single or multi-day packages that start at 210 euros, not including accommodation. Several treatments use wine or grapes, like the moisturizing honey and wine wrap, the firming merlot scrub or the relaxing grape bath. My husband and I opted for a “pulp friction” massage (for two) with fresh grapes, and while I will say the sensation of having cold grapes squeezed and rubbed all over me while the juice ran over my body was a bit strange, at the end I felt very relaxed and refreshed, and my skin was soft, smooth, and hydrated.

Spa guests are also welcome to use the relaxation area, the sauna, the Roman baths, the shower experience (which alternates pressure and temperature in a private shower),  foot baths, ice fountain, heated stone lounger, and indoor pool.

The grounds

The Yeatman sits on the top of a hill on the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the Douro River, close to Porto’s many port wine houses. In addition to the spa and dining options, there’s a large garden and croquet lawn, an outdoor pool, an indoor pool, several lounge areas, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and eleven meeting and event rooms.

The experience

While the rooms at the Yeatman meet luxury standards and the location is ideal for exploring all the delights of Porto, what really makes the Yeatman shine is the level of service. Staff is always available but unobtrusive, ready to help with directions, call a taxi, or arrange dinner reservations. When I discovered I’d left the adapter for my phone charger, the staff happily lent me one for my stay.

For those traveling with kids, the Yeatman also provides all day babysitting and entertainment as part of the Kids Club. And the Yeatman is eco-friendly – solar panels heat the water, low-energy lighting is used throughout, the hotel sources supplies locally, and the gardens are a haven for local birds and plant life.

For a luxury wine getaway in the Porto, I highly recommend the Yeatman. Staying here doesn’t come cheap, but if you can afford the splurge, it’s well worth it for the beautiful views, elegant rooms, and excellent service. If you can’t swing an overnight, be sure to stop by for a drink and the view or for an indulgent spa treatment.

Review: Lisbon Guests Hostel

Opened in 2007 and located in central Lisbon not far from a metro stop and Restauradores square, Lisbon Guests offers one of the most affordable private rooms in a very affordable city. Single private rooms (with shared bathrooms) range from 25-25 euros per night, with double rooms going for as low as 44 euros per night. And in some respects…you get what you pay for.

During my visit the hostel was going through some renovations. The building dates back to 1870; today the hostel is run by a descendant of the original family that built it. This made the building a bit hard to find as it was covered in scaffolding, but noise was not a problem and I’m told the facade renovations are now done and the next step is to build an outdoor social area on the ground floor for guests, which I think will be a welcome addition. As it was when I visited, aside from the rooms there was a small and adequately stocked kitchen, a small common room with couch and TV, and a small desk with a computer for guests to use (I was never able to get it to work, but there is also free wi-fi).

Owner/manager Ana Rita was pleasant and very helpful, arranging a cab for our early morning departure and offering suggestions for things to do. The other guests we saw were quiet and respectful. The room, though basic and small, was very clean and had a comfortable double bed, a wardrobe, nightstand and chair. My only complaint was the bathroom. Unlike other “shared” bathrooms that I have experienced in hostels, this was truly a communal commode. Rather than one toilet and shower in a room that could be locked, this bathroom had a shower stall and two toilets that could be used while another person was in the shower. If you’re coming from a dorm-style hostel, you’ll probably expect this, but if you more often stay at guesthouses and hotels, the set up is inconvenient and uncomfortable.

If you’re looking for a luxurious stay in Lisbon, Lisbon Guests is not the right choice. It isn’t trying to be fancy, but rather to offer clean, comfortable, and inviting accommodation at an excellent price and at that – with the exception of the bathroom situation – it does a fine job.

Disclaimer: I received a discount on my stay, but my opinions are my own.

Staying in a Narrowboat in London

When it comes to accommodation choices – especially in a big city where camping might not be an option – you’re generally limited as to the type of place you stay. Sure, you can choose between a hotel, hostel, B&B, apartment, guesthouse or inn, but really these are all just variations on a theme – a building with multiple compartmentalized rooms that offer a bed, a bathroom, and if you’re lucky, access to common room and kitchen.

But there are other options. In fact, there is a whole host of unusual places to stay in Europe, from convents and cave hotels to prisons, castles and mountains huts. You can stay on a farm, in an igloo, in a barn, and on a boat. If that last one piqued your interest, check out the narrowboats in London.

London’s narrowboats are generally about 7 feet wide, made to fit the narrow canals of England. You can rent one for a weekend or longer and pilot your way through the many canals in the London area. Stay in one spot for the whole trip or travel around, stick close to London or venture father afield – the choice is up to you. Prices range according to the length of the rental, the size of the boat and the season in which you’ll be traveling. Of course, the more popular the season (summer) and the more people with whom you’ll be sharing the boat, the more expensive the rental will be. But if you come in off season, you can score a boat that sleeps 2-4 people for as little as 200 pounds per night.

Booking in off season can help you save big. Even if you book a boat that sleeps seven people in shoulder season (May and October) you’ll pay less than 80 pounds per person, per night; it’s more than a hostel, but comparable to the cost of many hotels, and you can save money by cooking your own meals on the boat. Plus, since the boat also serves as your transport, you’ll save on the cost of a car rental or train tickets if you plan to explore outside of London. That actually makes a narrowboat stay one of the better London travel deals available.

Enjoy a Spring Vacation at Disneyland

mickeyminnieMost of those living in colder regions are already sick and tired of the long and cold winter we had to deal with. And I can probably speak for all of us who don’t like cold, that a vacation – no matter how long or short – to a warmer place is exactly what’s in order.

Disneyland is definitely a good choice for a spring vacation, whether you want to surprise the kids with something nice or enjoy some days away with your sweetheart.

When it comes to planning your vacation at Disneyland, the first question to keep in mind is whether you want to choose one of the Disneyland Packages or plan everything on your own. Packages are a nice choice if you are not much of an independent planner and prefer to just enjoy the vacation. Some (most) packages include daily passes to the theme parks so you’ll be saving some money as well. And you can also find romantic packages which combine the fun of the theme parks with pampering your loved one.

If you don’t mind planning everything and you want to explore the city as well – some shopping would be nice right about now – , then booking the flight and accommodation separately is the best choice.

Cheap flights to LA are really not hard to find and if you are keeping your eyes peeled on the airline’s special offers you’ll be able to save even more money on your flight (although you’ll be forced to arrange your vacation around the offer, of course).

Cheap hotels in Los Angeles aren’t hard to find either, especially if you know where to look for them. Do remember that it’s a good idea to rent a car. You’ll have the freedom to choose a cheaper hotel located further from the sights and you can go to the theme parks whenever you feel like it. Plus, taking day trips and long rides is interesting as well.

Romantic Valentine’s Getaway: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

beach-loveValentine’s Day is just three weeks away and we can guarantee that many of you haven’t planned yet anything. No, of course we are not blaming anyone. We are just offering some ideas for those who don’t know what to do and those who want something different than the typical dinner, movie and special night together.

Puerto Vallarta is a very popular vacation destination in Mexico. The beautiful beaches, sparkling blue waterfalls, exciting nightlife and luxurious resorts offer plenty of opportunities for having fun and spending a romantic getaway. Walking hand in hand on the sandy beach, sipping an exotic cocktail while watching the perfect sunset or enjoying exotic fruits in the privacy of your room while you whisper sweet nothings in your sweetheart’s ears, are just some of the things which can me the vacation perfect.

Valentine’s Day falls right in the middle of the high tourist season and the prices for both flight and accommodation aren’t exactly cheap. However, flights to Puerto Vallarta don’t need to ruin your budget. Typically, if you book two to four weeks prior to departure, you get excellent deals. A round trip flight to Puerto Vallarta starts at $353 per person (depart Feb 12; return Feb 16).

When you want to (pleasantly) surprise your sweetheart, it’s a good idea to look for a hotel which offers certain amenities to make a romantic vacation possible (although sometimes it doesn’t take much to do something nice). But that doesn’t mean cheap hotels in Puerto Vallarta don’t offer the perfect environment for a special getaway. A cozy boutique hotel can be both affordable and charming. For $88 per night you can have a true Mexican-style vacation with a romantic twist, right on the beach.

Another interesting option is to look for Mexico cruises . For certain couples, cruises represent the perfect romantic getaway. All you need to do is board the ship, enjoy the many activities planned and visit the cities in the itinerary. It can be tiring, but it can also be relaxing. And every night, you can try a new restaurant and a new way to charm your sweetheart.

Valentine’s Day Getaway in Los Angeles

la-beachLos Angeles is one of the most diverse cities in the entire United States. The center of the entertainment industry, the City of Angels is also a major fashion hub and shopping center. It might feel a bit unusual to recommend Los Angeles for a romantic getaway. But, we do need to realize that each couple is unique and there are many ways to show your love.

The flight

As in the case of planning any romantic getaway, the first step is to book the airfare. Start by looking into air tickets to Los Angeles . The area is served by several airports and you should look into all possibility. Cheap tickets to LAX are usually easier to find as you’d be flying into the biggest airport in the area.

Alternatively, you can look for cheap tickets to Oakland , spend a few days there and then take a road trip to Los Angeles.

The accommodation

As in the case of all big cities, there are plenty of choices for accommodation. It only depends on what you want to do and therefore choose an area where you want to stay. Considering that you want to impress your lover, you can look for a budget hotel rather than a hostel or a motel. If there are some romantic restaurants in the area, then it’s just for the better.

Romantic things to do in Los Angeles

As I’ve mentioned earlier, Los Angeles isn’t New York or Paris so it’s hard to find a lot of romantic things to do. However, for certain types of couples, Los Angeles can be very romantic. Some as simple as strolling the beach hand in hand and watching the sunset together is enough to make your lover’s heart jump for joy.

You can walk hand in hand and do some shopping. Of course you can dare to give her your credit card (as a special Valentine’s gift) but you are the only one who will know what will happen with your credit limit. Or take her to a very romantic restaurant with a view – maybe in a place perched high above the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

If your budget allows for splurges, invest in a romantic sunset flight. When the sun sets over the city, take your loved one and watch the colors from above. For added bonus, get the dining option as well. If planes aren’t romantic (or adventurous) enough, then you can always go for a romantic helicopter ride. You can add the champagne upgrade for a more bubbly experience (or if you want to pop the question).

Which area of Los Angeles should you stay in?

hotelsignRecently a friend was planning on visiting Los Angeles from the San Francisco area, and since it was their first visit to La La Land in about 15 years I decided to help out with some suggestions. It then occurred to me that this is one of the most confusing hotel cities on the planet and I should write something about this. My friend had everything up to his OAK airport parking handled, but didn’t even know which part of the city to stay in.

Where to stay in Los Angeles if you aren’t sure

Many first time visitors book their flights to LAX, and then look for a hotel near the airport because that sounds convenient. While it is convenient, and they’ve built dozens of hotels in that area because of that, it’s actually a terrible part of town to stay in unless you have specific business in that area. There are hundreds or even thousands of hotels in Los Angeles, and unfortunately they are spread out all over.

My best tip is that if you are coming into the city for something specific, and especially if you need to spend more than one day at that thing, stay near there. In other words, if you want to go to Disneyland or something else in Anaheim for two or more days, it’s not a bad idea to stay near there. The same is true of the San Fernando Valley for Universal Studios or other attractions near there.

Areas to consider

Santa Monica/Venice Beach

This is always my choice for those who can afford it, and fortunately there are quite a few discount hotels in the area, even though real estate prices are high. Santa Monica has good public transportation compared to the rest of the city, plus decent nightlife, dining, and shopping, and of course a really nice beach.

Hollywood

I lived for several years in Hollywood and unless you are after something very specific, it’s likely to be disappointing. If you want to attend some TV show tapings and that sort of thing, it can be fun, but don’t stay here if you want to see celebrities or things like that, because you won’t.

Downtown

This area is actually getting better, after several decades of work, but it’s still quite remote from most of the tourist attractions, in spite of being “downtown.” If you aren’t going to a convention or don’t want to learn about ethnic neighborhoods, it’s probably better to stay elsewhere.

South Bay

Assuming you are renting some wheels, this is another great choice. The cities of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Manhattan Beach all have loads of small hotels in them, yet the area still feels like it’s “locals only.” There’s great food and nightlife and excellent beaches and recreation. The only trouble is it’s not too close to much else. At least it’s way nicer than Downtown.

LAX area

As mentioned in the intro, there are many hotels around the airport, and unless you have some specific reason to stay near the airport, don’t.

The Westside

This is a confusing city and I can’t explain it all here. But suffice to say, if you can afford it and you want a bit of glamour then staying in West Hollywood is far better than staying in the real Hollywood, and staying in Beverly Hills or Westwood is great too. There are cheap hotels just a mile or two from the city limits of the cities mentioned above, and since they are technically in Los Angeles proper they can’t charge much more.

San Fernando Valley

There’s no reason to stay on the other side of the Hollywood Hills unless you have your own thing going on. Hotels are a bit cheaper on that side of the hills, and you’ll see why once you check in.

Orange County

If you want to see Disneyland and some beaches even better than those in Los Angeles, consider staying in Costa Mesa or Newport Beach. You have many options of places nicer than those in Anaheim, and you are still close to Disneyland.

Fall Travel Deals in San Diego

sandiegoA quick jaunt from Los Angeles and a city full of fun for all ages, San Diego is an ideal U.S. city to explore. I have always loved San Diego. Lots of sunshine, tattooed surfer boys, bikes along the boardwalks and great bars—and while the San Diego I love now is not the San Diego I loved as a kid (the zoo, Seaworld, the sea lions, the beach) it is certainly a city that can please all different kinds of demographics of travelers—from wild 20 somethings to families. And, with plenty of sunshine and the summer crowds gone, fall is actually an ideal time to spend some time in San Diego.

Bike along the beach at Mission Bay, hit the bars in Pacific Beach, catch one of the great ethnic heritage festivals in September or October, or check out some of the restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter. For those who are mourning the end of summer—blue skies and bikini weather lasts well through the autumn months in San Diego, making it an ideal place for a little getaway.

Plus, with strong completion into San Diego Airport between Virgin America, United, Southwest and Alaska Airlines it usually isn’t too difficult to find affordable flights to San Diego. I recently wrote about all of the great fall travel deals to San Diego—and from plenty of great hotel deals and cheap flights it may be hard to resist an autumn getaway to the Southern California city.

For those who want nice accommodations for not a whole lot of money, the cheap hotels in San Diego tend to be centered about 3 miles from downtown in the Mission Bay beach area. Here you can find hotels that are not only super close to the beach, but are also just a short cab ride or drive downtown and walking distance to Pacific Beach. The Best Western at Mission Bay has a three-night-for-the-price of-two offer for stays through December 31.

Another hotel in Mission Bay offering up discounted rooms is the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa, which is actually the property where my cousin got married just a few years ago. I can attest that this hotel is absolutely beautiful and with rooms now being offered $129/night (the same rooms can go for as much as $239/night). Jen Leo from the Los Angeles Times tested some of these rates and found that while it was difficult to find the discounted rates on the hotel’s web site, she found the $129 San Diego waterfront resort and spa deal easily for both mid-week stays and weekends on Hot Wire’s Travel Ticker web site.

Another way to save money on a trip to San Diego is to book your hotel and airfare as a package. With hotels and airlines bundling your trip for you, you’ll not only save time, but you could also potentially save money by booking one of the many San Diego vacation packages.

Deals on Cruising From San Diego

San Diego is also a launching point for many cruises heading south to Mexico to warmer waters and temperatures this time of year. While cruise line executives have been making plenty of statements on how well they are faring in the recession, it’s clear from all the crazy sales on cruises that some cruise lines are frantically slashing prices to fill up ships.

If you are still hoping to get away for the upcoming holiday weekend, there are plenty of great deals to be had on last-minute cruises departing from San Diego.

If you’ve got a little more time on your hands and want to take more than a 3-7 day cruise, you can sail for 14 days from San Diego to Miami on board the Celebrity Constellation, visiting Cabo San Lucas, Acapulco, Huatulco, Putarenas, Cristobal and Cartagena. The cruise departs December 6, and will offer passengers the opportunity to check out fabulous beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean, as well as make stops in two continents and several countries for $899.

If you would rather opt for a shorter, more family-orientated cruise, Disney cruises also depart from the Port at San Diego. Plus, not only can you score some deals on Disney cruises (and all cruises fdor that matter) right now, but San Diego is the perfect city to explore with the kids before the ship ever leaves port. MSNBC recently ranked San Diego as one of America’s 10 Most Kid-Friendly Cities. With the fabulous San Diego zoo, Sea World, and plenty of fun activities to enjoy outside, San Diego is an ideal place to vacation with the kiddos.

If San Diego is not your thing, check out more travel deals from Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Here We Come!

downtown-los-angelesCalifornia, the largest US state by population, is famous for Disneyland, Malibu, Hollywood, Golden Gate, Napa Valley and the incredible weather. With so many things to do, the first time traveler should find a focus city and plan the vacation around that place. If your vacation plans include some days spent at Disneyland, then it’s a good idea to choose Los Angeles as your base.

Arriving in Los Angeles

When flying into Los Angeles, there are several airports to choose from. The largest is Los Angeles International Airport, better known as LAX. The airport is located about 16 miles from downtown and is a major hub for United Airlines. When looking for cheap flights to LA , it’s a good idea to start with United Airlines or other airlines which have bases here, such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines.

For those planning to get to Disneyland without stopping in LA first, John Wayne Airport is the better alternative, located just 14 miles from the theme parks. It is the airport which receives Southwest Airlines flights , so make sure to check their offers especially if you fly from cities such as Phoenix, Chicago, Las Vegas or San Diego (which the airline uses as focus cities).

Finding a place to stay

Los Angeles is a large city so finding the perfect place to stay can be quite a daunting task. Cheap hotels in Los Angeles can easily be found in the areas around Glendale or Pasadena. But these are far from downtown and beaches so you need to take into account that you’ll have to travel quite a bit to get to the tourist attractions. With a bit of research you can find some affordable places to stay in the Downtown or even the Hollywood area, but most likely you’ll have to get used to the public transportation system if you want to see as much of the city as possible.

Even if your vacation plans aren’t centered on Disneyland, chances are you’d want to visit the park sooner or later. There are easy ways to get from Los Angeles to Anaheim , which is, technically, where the park is located.

If Disneyland is on your agenda, you might want to look for a place to stay right within the park. Hotels in Disneyland come in many shapes and sizes, but generally speaking, the ones within the park will be a bit more expensive than those located outside the park. Lately, however, many hotels offer packages which include not only free nights but also tickets to the theme parks and other services.

Better yet you can look for deals on hotels in Anaheim and you’ll be saving some money on accommodation, for sure.

Traveller’s House – Lisbon, Portugal – Trekker’s Hostel Highlights

Opened on October 6, 2006, Traveller’s is located in the middle of Rua Augusta, the main tourist street in Lisbon, in an area called Baixa, known for being the most central and historical. Walking distance from the ferry and a short bus trip (#91) from the airport, its location makes it the ideal hostel to swing by during your stay in Lisbon.

Along with the ideal location, Traveller’s House also offers daily activities for a small fee, such as wine tasting, happy hour, bar crawl, piri piri chicken (spicy Portuguese marinade) and petiscos (Portuguese Tapas/snacks). Breakfast is included, and at €18-22 a night you might expect this to be cold cereal and watered down juice, but that is far from the truth. In the dining area you sit down at a comfy table with a placemat, utensils and all the condiments you would need. Then the house mom comes up and asks how you would like your eggs. A very pleasant, and delicious surprise, especially if you have enjoyed the bar crawl the night before.

The dorm rooms are super comfortable with large bunk beds and fantastic storage. In the large built-in lockers under the beds there are also individual safes for you to store your passports and money. The showers have superb water pressure, always an important factor after a long day of touring, and the wood accents throughout the house gives it a warm homely feel. The common room comes complete with huge bean bags and a comfy couch. There is free internet and a small TV room, both of which are super comfortable and perfect for vegging out and recovering. The staff completes this perfect package with their enthusiasm, knowledge of local info and generally making you feel like you are part of the family.
